I am walking through the mall, wearing this ring. I am holding hands with a man much greater than you ever could be. He is patiently watching me window shop for shoes we can’t afford to buy, because he loves to see me smile. He has just made a comment about how one day he will buy me a bigger ring, one that is so large and covered with diamonds that it is ugly, because that’s what I deserve. I am happy and alive. He kisses me and I leave my eyes open for the joy of seeing him.

I look at a pair of stiletto boots and sigh, feeling a wave of regret wash over me. He notices and I just talk, because that’s what you do when you’re in love with your best friend. I explain to him how at one point I was younger, more fun. I took risks, had friends. Being classy was my last concern. I was joining this world of intriguing creatures who invited me to wonderful parties, I could be in a short dress and heels every night as my years went by, and always feel beautiful. He looks at his feet and apologizes for not being able to give me an extravagant lifestyle. I assure him, it isn’t his fault, and its the truth.

Its your fault, “Mr. learning experience”. The unattractive, wealthy boy who wasted my time. When you left, you left me with nothing, and no one to care. I regret being so easily manipulated, but mostly I regret that I did not have the opportunity to leave you for him.
