neverquarantinethepast: A year ago my ex-girlfriend and I moved from our comfortable country apartment outside Blacksburg Virginia that we lived in for a summer into her brother’s old bedroom in her mother’s basement in Woodbridge Virginia.  There were still band posters and action figured tacked to the wall from when he was in high school, and a dream catcher hung from the cork tile ceiling.  It did nothing to protect me from nightmares.  The first night in that house I dreamt that the house caught on fire and I was the only one to escape.  Inside the dream I felt unfazed by losing my girlfriend or her mom or their dog or her deadbeat ex-step-dad or my few belongings.  I watched the blaze alongside my new neighbors and other bystanders until the flames were no longer visible in the shattered windows and all that was left was smoke and a slow descent of ash covering the sidewalks and our cars.  Then I just took a walk around town until I woke up in the cool air like I used to do when I would sleep walk.  I was at home in Illinois, on the back steps to my basement apartment in Dixon.  and then I woke up for real, my head hanging off the edge of my couch.  I had that dream when I was awake a couple times. This guy. This guy has got it.
