The first time I came to visit you, we slept in the same bed. We had split up months before, but somehow we both silently agreed to break the rules. So I slept in your bed. Maybe we even kissed. It was dangerous and we didn’t care.
2The second time I came to visit you, I slept on your couch. I insisted that the couch was where I needed to sleep that night. You insisted that your bed was where I needed to sleep that night. I knew it was not a good idea. You were upset and you let me know. Maybe you even begged me.
3The third time I came to visit you, I slept on your couch. I didnt insist anything and neither did you. Maybe you offered me a spot in your bed if I wanted, but I passed. I went to sleep on your couch and we both acted like it meant nothing.
4The fourth and last time I came to visit you, I slept on your boyfriends couch. You recently had found the man of your dreams, and you love him. We watched our favorite movie together, the whole time I was wondering where I would sleep once it was over. You suggested I go to your boyfriends place, and I acted like that was cool. Maybe I tried to come up with some excuse why I should stay at yours and just sleep on the couch.
Now we are both engaged. You say you love him and I say I love her. Maybe we both mean it. But somehow years later I have never forgotten how it felt to sleep next to you in your bed. Or your warmth.
