The Drifters - This Magic Moment
James walked to the door and knocked. He heard yelling from the inside, and then suddenly there she was, in a pretty dress meant for summer, but it was already fall. They hurried to the car, and he opened the door for her, she got in. He got in, and started the car. The engine of that ol’ 55’ ford roared to life, and the radio blared, Ben E. King sang, “I knew that you felt it too, by the look in your eyes,” and they knew it, right then as they sped away from the curb. The two of them drove on, not saying a word.
They never made it to the movies that night. My mom tells this story with a glimmer in her eyes, one that suggests a great deal of pain buried deep. For the thought of her family, and how she left so suddenly, but also love. Love for a man who drove her away from all the torment in her life. Love for my father, who’s been gone 10 years now. All she has are the songs, but the songs are never enough.
